Celebrating Women in Science
Sherry Bell-Parker's dedication to water quality
Science is the foundation of progress, innovation, and the pursuit of knowledge. It helps us understand our world, improve lives, and solve complex challenges. However, for centuries, women and girls have faced barriers in pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
International Women and Girls in Science Day, recognized annually on February 11, highlights the critical role women play in scientific advancements. It is a day to celebrate their achievements, advocate for gender equality in STEM fields, and inspire future generations of female scientists.
At Provo Water Company, science is more than a concept—it is the driving force behind delivering safe and reliable water to the community. As the Water Quality Manager, Sherry Bell Parker has dedicated over 17 years to safeguarding the island’s water supply. Her passion for science began with curiosity—questioning how things work, why they happen, and how they can be improved. This drive led her to earn a degree in Biology, followed by a Master’s in Occupational Health and Science and Environmental Management. Today, she applies her expertise to oversee critical water quality processes that protect public health.
Sherry leads a team that ensures water safety through rigorous microbiological and chemical testing. Every day, they analyze bacteria levels, chlorine residuals, pH balance, turbidity, and chemical compositions to detect and prevent contamination. But their work extends beyond testing—science also plays a crucial role in understanding chemical reactions and refining treatment processes to ensure sustainability and efficiency. By using advanced laboratory techniques, Sherry and her team provide data-driven solutions that help maintain the highest water quality standards.
Women in science play an essential role in protecting the environment, improving health, and shaping the future of infrastructure. International Women and Girls in Science Day serves as a powerful reminder that women not only belong in science—they lead, innovate, and solve some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
To every young girl with a passion for discovery and every woman working tirelessly in STEM fields—your contributions matter. Science is limitless, and so are you.
Let’s continue to break barriers, inspire the next generation, and celebrate the incredible achievements of women in science!
